Weekend Box Office Battle
A24's "You Can See Everything" is tracking slightly ahead of DC's "Clayface" for the weekend lead. According to studio estimates, the documentary is expected to take in roughly $10.6 million from 3,242 theaters in its third week, while "Clayface" is expected to bring in about $10.4 million from 3,478 venues in its second week. Final figures will be released on Monday.
Rentrak's Head of Market Trends, Paul Dergarabedian, noted that a documentary running more than three hours rising to No. 1 in its third weekend is a rare feat for any film.
A Slow Halloween Weekend
The wider market was unusually quiet. The total box office for the holiday weekend amounted to only around $64 million, which Rentrak described as one of the slowest weekends in recent years.
The lull is attributed in part to the timing of the holiday, with many families opting for trick-or-treating rather than a trip to the multiplex. This is an improvement over the same period last year, when box office totaled roughly $49 million, led by "Regretting You" and "Black Phone 2."
A Record for the Documentary
By comparison, "Clayface" has generated $44.1 million in North America and $83 million worldwide, having been produced for $44 million.
A Different Market
The commercial performance of the Holmes documentary is a reminder that audiences in the market will pay to see stories of corporate fraud, accountability, and the human cost of public deception. It is not simply an industry curiosity. The strong word-of-mouth and repeat viewings suggest that when a film exposes how the powerful deceive the public, the market responds.
This is a market signal worth paying attention to. Where accountability is the story, the audience is there.
